Now in my tenth year photographing weddings, I have seen and experienced first hand the effects of not being confident with your own smile. Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, and it really breaks my heart when I see a bride or groom or even a guest hold back from smiling or laughing (especially when I’m around with the camera) because they’re not happy with how their teeth or smile appear. It could be because of concerns about their tooth size, shape, colour, alignment or a multitude of other reasons, but the end result is always the same – they use all their might to restrain from smiling too much in photos no matter now happy or joyful they are, and some even go to great lengths to cover up or hide their teeth whenever they smile or laugh.
I know what it’s like to feel this way. Growing up my teeth were small, crooked, overlapping and not very white despite brushing and flossing regularly – and I was incredibly insecure about it. For years I simply avoided doing anything about it and I got really good at hiding my smile. It wasn’t until my wife Britt (girlfriend at the time) asked me why I always looked so serious in photos that I realised my unhappiness with my smile was making me look like a seriously unhappy person even though deep down I had so much joy to share with the world. Well, it’s a good thing Britt is a dentist because she never got off my case after I finally admitted it to her. In the lead up to our wedding, she encouraged and supported me to get the dental treatment I needed, which meant getting braces at the age of 27. What I thought would be a long and embarrassing eighteen months wasn’t actually that bad, and the end result has been absolutely life changing. It was one of the best decisions I made, after marrying Britt of course, and now I no longer have to worry about being mistaken for an intense, serious or unhappy dude.
I am very excited (and proud) to share that my darling Britt has now opened her own dental clinic, The Grove Dental Rouse Hill, where she can offer transformational dental treatment to couples, clients and friends of Jonathan David Photography.
